It is easy to spew words and spun it to something that looks or sounds like a profound statement. I have encountered too many of this. And frankly it’s exhausting.
Thankfully this Saturday’s gallery visit is far from this kind of labour. I went to Corinne de San Jose’s “Everyday Is Like Sunday”, and it simply delivered that— a “Sunday”… a respite, an exhale, on this Saturday afternoon. It is a sound exhibit--sound as in it featured sound as art medium, and sound as in brilliant! Corinne isn’t only articulate, she has something to say.
I claim that the brilliance of the exhibit is in its presentation, which appears and appeals global and current, in contrast with its deep cultural embeddedness. By this I mean, the exhibit’s armature has specific meaning or “hugot” from our Filipinoness: transistor radio as sound, water as sound, waves as sound, words as sound, healing sound—with all these, there is relational experience, we, as a people, can collectively reference. This of course requires a more thorough unpacking...but since this is just a blog, i'll leave that task to whenever somebody challenges my claim.
In going through the exhibit, one isn’t only asked to just view, nor just listen. It is a collection of familiar things, which brings one to a very familiar “place”, we call Sunday.
